Why Your Gutters Might Be Tricking You 🕳️

This one had me scratching my head.

A guy in Bedford called us up — said every time it rained, water would vanish from his downspouts. No flow, no splash, nothing. Just… gone.

He swore he checked everything — “I even stuck a garden hose down there,” he said. “Sounded fine.”

We get there, climb up, and everything looks okay. Gutters seem clean. But I noticed one thing — the pipe felt heavy. Too heavy.

We disconnected the downspout… Out comes this long, slimy clog. It consisted of wet leaves, bird feathers, and — I kid you not — an old dog toy. A rubber bone. Moldy as hell.

Turns out the clog was far down in the vertical pipe. Just enough to stop the water, but not enough to back it up visibly. So water was just sitting there, soaking into the fascia, rotting everything behind the scenes.

We flushed it clean, disinfected the downspout, and fixed the minor rot damage before it spread.

He looked at me and said, “I never thought a dog toy can cost me a new soffit.”

Me neither, man. But here we are.

📌 Lesson?
Your gutters look fine from the top. Yet, if your drainage still sucks, there’s a good chance something’s lurking deeper.
