This job was… a little too organic.
We got a call from an older lady in Dartmouth. Sweet woman, said her son noticed something “odd” while trimming a tree. She hadn’t looked at the gutters in years — thought rain just… took care of it.
When we got there, we climbed up and bam — mushrooms. Actual mushrooms, popping up in clusters all along the gutter. Looked like something out of a forest floor. I half expected to see a squirrel with a campfire.
The buildup was insane. Wet leaves, composted dirt, bird droppings — basically the perfect conditions for fungus. The whole thing was holding moisture like a sponge.
And yep — water had started leaking into her soffit. Mold was already creeping into the attic insulation.
She was horrified. Said, “I thought gutters were just metal pipes. I didn’t know stuff could grow in them.”
Most people don’t. Gutters seem boring… until they become a biology experiment.
We cleared everything out, sanitized the area, and got her on a seasonal cleaning plan. Her roof is breathing again, and the mushrooms have been evicted.
Moral of the story?
If your gutter smells like a garden after rain, it might actually be one.
So check it. And if something’s growing up there, give HFX Home Services a call — before it starts asking for sunlight and water.
